Nice one for creating a forum guys! I think that it's imperative to have a disscussion board-esspecially for an open-source idea!

I think this is a brilliant project as it has used the idea of open source out of the world of computer programming into the wider world. This project demonstrates production and delivery of ideas and communication via an open source structure; which in my own humble opinion is important for society/culture/politics as it breaks down supposed hierarchies giving the opportunity for people to express themselves and put forward they're own opinions. I think this is positive as it validates people's worth; where ordinarily they would have been ignored/shunned/forgotton.

In the case of this particular project it seems to give people a chance to learn about filmmaking by just editing video without having to first buy and learn how to use a camera AND you have a whole community behind you to reflect, comment and discuss from. It makes the playing field more level in a way as we have all had the same footage to work from. This itself is EVEN more interesting as the same footage as been processed, cut and mashed into forms that seem to reflect individuals themselves- THE FILMMAKERS! It seems to demonstrate the nature of SUBJECTIVITY in film language, i.e THERE IS NO RIGHT ANSWER!?!?!?!

(of course i could be talking rubbish- say what you think!)

and Thank YOU STRAY CINEMA! You guys seem to have so much enthusiasm, focus and interest in this subject. The great thing about the idea is that it seems it doesn't belong to anyone. It seems you guys have started it (given birth to the project if you will) and are interested in others taking it and shaping it for everybody else to have a go!

Also i think the blogs are very refreshing as we get constant updates on "the creators" thoughts and research, which helps to see where the ideas are coming from and where they might lead, opening it for us to think about these wider matters too.

Thankyou STRAY CINEMA!
and
Thankyou to the filmmakers who have submitted entries.
and
Thank you to the people who submitted music to uswe copyright free- fair play!

(I also submitted an entry and wouldn't look at any others until i did my cut and it was such a surprise to see so much variety and individuality- and also made me opinionated and questioning about why people had made the choices they did! which again i think is important to open up these discussions)

With the advent of this forum i really look forward to discussions with fellow filmmakers!

Nice one, take it easy, mandymushroom X

hi mandy, thanks so much for your (very positive) feedback on the project, much appreciated!

yip we hope you find this forum useful, please help us spread the word about it's existence.

and yes we believe film is a powerful medium, and we are passionate about making filmmaking accessible and allowing more people to use it to tell their stories and communicate with others around the world. and agreed, there is no right answer as to which edit is best:)

hey, interesting that you did not watch any other stray cinema edits before you made your own, was that deliberate?

I will spread the word as i can!
Interestingly i have a friend in Canada (i'm from england and he may be back soon!) who a couple of years ago wanted to set up a film production company called STRAY CINEMA. i think we had/have been interested in the idea of open source, though i can't quite remember what he wanted for the production company, although, the back bone of the ethos was for people to stray from what they would normally consider the 'right' path, find your own way, explore, move away from the norms, these kind of philosophies. I told him about this stray cinema recently and his first reaction was, "oh" as in he thought other people had got there first, which in a competitive world is a negative thing; however i feel the beauty of this STRAYCINEMA.COM is that you guys seem welcome to others joining and creating their own bit. Which is the beauty of open source,
we are not comptitive, we are sharing and we are individuals and we can work together :)

hehe, really? actually we were quite surprised to learn that straycinema.com had not been taken at the time we were looking for a name!

i found a website earlier that might interest you - workbookproject.com - a guide to open source filmmaking. also check out Film Spring Open (a virtual film studio), i blogged about it the other day.

yes i deliberatly tried not to watch other entries as my own little experiment, as i felt if did watch other entries this would influence the cut i did. not that this would be bad thing necessarily, but i was just really interested in seeing the cut i made with only my own previous influences. this also made watching the other entries to watch a more refreshing exercise as i had already taken my own journey with the material.
cheers for the links.
