the artist 2.0
im always interested in stories where art meets the internet.
i just read an interesting article called sex, drugs and updating your blog, which focuses on singer songwriter jonathan coulten, and his rise to fame via the internet.
the nyt article itself makes some interesting observations about the changing approach of the artist and the art itself:
"Will the Internet change the type of person who becomes a musician or writer? It’s possible to see these online trends as Darwinian pressures that will inevitably produce a new breed — call it an Artist 2.0 — and mark the end of the artist as a sensitive, bohemian soul who shuns the spotlight.
For many of these ultraconnected artists, it seems the nature of creativity itself is changing. It is no longer a solitary act: their audiences are peering over their shoulders as they work, offering pointed comments and suggestions."
there is a response to that article from jonathan coulten himself which is also worth reading...if you have the time. as it states up top, the post is rather long. anyway, i like the last paragraph:
"if art has an audience, and if that art is allowed to go wherever it wants to, it will eventually find its way to where it’s supposed to be. That’s the theory anyway, and I think it will only become more true as the world gets smaller and we all get more and more connected."
