A little memory I’ve just had…

When we first started developing the concept of Stray Cinema – an open source film, my friend Rob kept asking me the same question over and over again "what sets Stray Cinema apart from anything else that’s ever been done before". He does alot of branding stuff, so a valid question to ask I guess.

It really frustrated me this question, because it seemed that all aspects of Stray Cinema had been done before in some way (there is even a few other open source films – shock horror)!

Then I clicked. It wasn't the separate components of Stray Cinema (i.e. open source film, online community, film screening, user generated content and competition) that made it unique, it was the combination of the ideas and the way they worked together and leveraged off each other. Our point of difference was that Stray Cinema is a complete journey that touches on different ideas each step of the way. There is a strong online component of Stray Cinema, especially right now as we try to build up a global community, however, we want to acknowledge that important things still happen in the ‘real world’. People still want to see their film screened on a big screen, and have live audience interaction and response to their work. People like to too see, talk to and touch other people. It’s in our nature. Hence the navigation from online to real world with our screening.

Anyway, just wanted to share this little memory of Stray Cinema’s conception with you. It seemed fitting just after its one month anniversary. Awwww.

In other news, this is my first summer in Wellington NZ (o.k. we are still one month off), and it feels like winter. It’s blooming cold here!

Well, well, well, well

Six submissions all in the space of 3 days! It’s very exciting, I have to say.

Thanks so much you seven people who have made submissions. :)

re: my rotoscoping fantasy (see blog I wrote yesterday). My good friend Martyn found a guy who can do this fantastic thing yesterday (http://www.myspace.com/markafish). He is from nz, and I don’t think we have had any submissions from nz yet...so here's hoping. He seems pretty interested.

I thought the submission by Rotamas earlier on today was an interesting interpretation of the footage, being a commuter in London over the time of the London bombings, I think it summed up nicely the fear alot of people felt using public transport. There were so many people in the position of 'what if', and then ‘when next’ etc. Sometimes imagination gets the best of you.

Hey also, please vote on the film submissions. This is really important, as the voting will determine our finalists who will be screened in the real world.

Speaking of the real world, I better get back to it. Hope your all having a lovely day.

Stray Cinema - one month anniversary

By michelle, 3 years, 10 months ago - No Comments

Today is Stray Cinema's one month anniversary. The last two and a bit days have been very exciting, as we have had our second and third film submissions. I have been a little worried that people are having trouble with downloading or using the footage. Please let me know if this is the case, we will help you where we can. Also we should have the footage available as mpg's later on this week. This will be an alternative download to the QuickTime files already up there.

Anyone know how to rotoscope?

By michelle, 3 years, 10 months ago - No Comments

I am super keen to see a stray cinema film submission that has been rotoscoped. He he, admittedly this is a secret fantasy of mine, to see the footage rotoscoped...does anyone know how to do this, or know someone who does? Somebody - please - indulge me!!!

On that note, for those of you not submitting a film, but are part of our community (i.e you have registered on our site), is there any particular genres or ideas that you want to see brought to life in a stray cinema film remix? Don’t be shy, as David Lynch once said “The sky’s the limit with digital”.

We are still working on the commenting function for this blog page. Until we sort this please leave comments on our myspace – (http://myspace.com/straycinemacompetition) or you can email me info@straycinema.com.

michelle's first blog ever

By michelle, 3 years, 10 months ago - No Comments

The idea of a blog actually kind of scares me. I haven’t quite put my finger on exactly why yet, but I will face my fears, in the process hopefully understand why. And hope this thing gets easier as time goes on.

So sorry if I’m a little awkward and hard to understand at times. I’m no writer, but I will try and flesh out some thoughts :)

To give you an idea of the backdrop at the minute, I’m sitting in my room in windy Wellington (nz), rain splattering against my window. My flatmates have just been food shopping at pak n save and the sound of rustling of plastic bags and tins stacking are coming from the kitchen. It reminds me that I really need to do a shop cos I’m almost out of food.

But you don’t want to know about that do you?

I wish I could take credit for all of the ideas and components that make up Stray Cinema, but I can’t…just some of them. From the get go, this project has very much been a collaboration with various talented people. I see myself more as a director – of these ideas.

When I directed a film in London (this year’s footage) last year, I had no idea that this project (Stray Cinema) would be the outcome. I thought we would only make the one cut, and my interest at the time, was more in the accessibility of digital media. The idea that someone like lil old inexperienced me could go out and buy a digi cam, and tell a story using the all powerful medium of film.

I’m really looking forward to seeing what other people make of our footage. I don’t know what will happen with the future of this project, or what type of films will be made from our footage. I guess that’s what I like about it; it is an experiment, with no defined outcome, so it will be a continuous learning curve.

I will try and update this daily with what’s going on with the project. I guess it will be good for me to have this record if nothing else, and if a few people are interested in reading that’s super dooper!!! Yeah, I like the idea of this blog thing more and more.

Thanks for reading. And please leave comments, as I’m always looking for feedback, and ways we can grow the project.

See ya
Michelle :)
